You’re reading something about quantum mechanics and a sentence stops you cold — like something you once read in an ancient Hindu text, or heard a Zen teacher say. Or felt, wordlessly, on a morning when the world briefly stopped pretending to be made of separate things.
David Bohm had that experience. Except he came at it from the other direction. He was a quantum physicist who studied under Oppenheimer, debated Einstein, got arrested for refusing to betray his colleagues, and was exiled from American science before he turned forty. He spent the rest of his life in other people’s countries, working out a theory that most of his peers dismissed — and that the ancient sages had been whispering for millennia.
At the deepest level of reality, separation is an illusion. Everything is enfolded into everything.
Before we talk about the physics, we need to talk about the man. Because Bohm’s theory didn’t come from comfort. It came from exile.
In the late 1940s, Cold War paranoia was reshaping American life. The House Un-American Activities Committee — HUAC — had been set up to root out supposed communist influence in government, academia, and culture. It operated through public hearings that were less investigation than ritual humiliation: witnesses were summoned, pressured to name names, and blacklisted if they refused. Careers were destroyed on suspicion alone. A machine for enforcing ideological conformity through fear.
In 1949, HUAC came for Bohm. He was an assistant professor at Princeton — brilliant, politically quiet, but he’d had ties to left-wing groups as a student at Berkeley under Oppenheimer. The committee demanded he testify against his colleagues. He invoked the Fifth Amendment and refused. Over the next two years, the machinery ground forward: he was arrested for contempt of Congress in 1950, acquitted in 1951. But by then it didn’t matter. Princeton had already suspended him and declined to renew his contract. He was cleared by the courts and condemned by the institution.
Einstein — who had been Bohm’s closest intellectual interlocutor at the nearby Institute for Advanced Study — wrote letters of recommendation to help him find a position abroad. Bohm left for the University of São Paulo. A month after he arrived, the U.S. consulate confiscated his passport. He would never return to American academic life.
He moved from São Paulo to Israel to England, eventually landing at Birkbeck College in London, where he spent the rest of his career. It was in this exile — stripped of institutional safety, outside the reach of orthodoxy — that he began to see quantum mechanics differently.
Einstein had nudged him in this direction. When Bohm was still at Princeton, he’d written a textbook presenting the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics — the standard framework most physicists simply accepted and worked within. Einstein told him it was the clearest account of that interpretation he’d ever read. And then he told Bohm he didn’t believe a word of it. There had to be something deeper. Something *real* underneath the mathematics.
Bohm set out to find it.
Here is the image that changes everything.
Bohm loved a particular demonstration. Imagine two clear cylinders, one nested inside the other, with the gap between them filled with a thick, syrupy fluid. You drop a bead of ink into the fluid. Now turn a crank to slowly rotate the inner cylinder. The ink stretches into a long thread. The thread thins. Thins further. Disappears. The fluid looks perfectly clear — no trace of the drop.
Now crank it the other way. Same number of turns, reversed.
The thread reappears. Thickens. Gathers. The drop reassembles, exactly as it was.
The order was never destroyed. It was “enfolded”.
This, Bohm said, is what reality actually is. What we see — objects, particles, separate things in space and time — is the “explicate order”: the unfolded surface. But underneath it lies something far deeper. He called it the “implicate order”: a domain where everything is folded into everything else. Non-local. Undivided. Whole.
The movement between them — the constant unfolding and re-enfolding — he called the “holomovement”. Not a thing, but a process. A living, flowing totality that can never be fully captured by any fixed description.
Think of it this way: an electron isn’t a tiny ball bouncing around. It’s a pattern of enfolding and unfolding within the holomovement. Like that ink drop — appearing, disappearing, reappearing — guided by an invisible order we can’t see unless we know how to look.
This wasn’t just philosophy. Bohm gave it mathematical teeth.
In 1952, he published what’s now called the “de Broglie–Bohm pilot-wave theory” — a complete reformulation of quantum mechanics. In standard quantum theory, particles don’t have definite positions until you measure them. In Bohm’s version, they always do. They’re guided by a real wave field through something he called the “quantum potential” — a field that doesn’t push particles with force, but “in-forms” them. It carries information about the entire system, non-locally and instantaneously.
This is the key: in Bohm’s framework, non-locality isn’t a paradox. It’s the most natural thing in the world. Two entangled particles across the galaxy behave as one — not because of some spooky signal, but because they were never actually separate. They’re both unfoldings of the same implicate order.
And here’s where the experiments caught up with him. John Bell — directly inspired by reading Bohm — proved his famous theorem in 1964: any theory that tries to maintain local realism (the idea that things have definite properties and only influence each other locally) must fail. Experiments confirmed it. The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Alain Aspect, John Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger for exactly these entanglement experiments.
The universe is non-local. Bohm knew this decades earlier.
Where most physicists stopped at equations, Bohm kept going. He asked: if the implicate order is the deeper reality, and everything unfolds from it — where does consciousness fit?
His answer was radical. Mind and matter, he said, are not two separate substances. They are two aspects of one underlying movement. He coined the term “soma-significance”: every event has a physical (somatic) dimension and a meaningful (significant) dimension, and they flow into each other. Meaning shapes matter. Matter gives rise to meaning. Neither is primary.
He put it simply: ”Consciousness is much more of the implicate order than is matter.”
And even more provocatively: ”Even the electron is informed with a certain level of mind.”
This wasn’t casual mysticism. It was a logical extension of his physics. If the quantum potential carries information that guides particles non-locally, then information — meaning — is woven into the fabric of reality at the deepest level. Consciousness isn’t something the brain produces. It’s something the implicate order “is”.
For 25 years, Bohm explored this territory in dialogue with the philosopher-sage “Jiddu Krishnamurti”. Their conversations — published as The Ending of Time and The Future of Humanity — are among the most remarkable exchanges between science and contemplative wisdom ever recorded. They both kept arriving at the same place: what they called “the ground” — the unmanifest source from which thought, time, and the sense of self arise.
The Dalai Lama, who knew Bohm through the Mind and Life dialogues, called him “my science guru.”
And this is where it gets beautiful. Because what Bohm described using wave equations and quantum potentials, the ancient traditions described using entirely different languages — and arrived at the same architecture.
Vedanta calls it Brahman — the infinite, unchanging ground of pure awareness from which all forms arise. The manifest world of separate things is Maya — not illusion exactly, but appearance. The surface mistaken for the depth. Bohm would have nodded. He wrote: The notion that all these fragments are separately existent is evidently an illusion, and this illusion cannot do other than lead to endless conflict and confusion.
That sentence could come from the Mandukya Upanishad. It came from a quantum physicist.
The Tao Te Ching opens with: “The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao.” The source is unnameable. Bohm’s holomovement, in his own words, is “undefinable and immeasurable” — known only implicitly, never directly grasped. The map is never the territory. The explicate is never the implicate.
And then there’s “Indra’s Net” — the Buddhist image from the Avatamsaka Sutra. An infinite cosmic net, with a jewel at every intersection. Each jewel reflects every other jewel. No center. No edge. Total interpenetration. This is the implicate order rendered as mythology. Each region of Bohm’s enfolded reality contains the whole, just as each jewel in the net mirrors all the others.
We live in a time of extraordinary fragmentation. Political, psychological, spiritual. We have been trained — by culture, by education, by the very structure of our language — to see the world through the lens of duality. My body here. Your body there. Mind separate from matter. The observer separate from the observed.
Bohm spent his life showing that this duality is not a feature of reality. It’s a feature of our thinking about reality. The implicate order doesn’t care about our categories. It holds everything in one unbroken movement. The ancient traditions had a word for this. So did Bohm. Wholeness.
”Deep down the consciousness of mankind is one,” Bohm said. ”This is a virtual certainty because even in the vacuum matter is one; and if we don’t see this, it’s because we are blinding ourselves to it.”
The physicist saw what the mystics saw.
